Prof Mike Grocott

Professional Biography

Prof Mike Grocott is Head of the Extreme Environment Research Group at the ISEH and the director of CASE, which he co-founded with Dr Kevin Fong in 2000. Mike is an hononary senior lecturer in Physiology at UCL and is also the Director of Caudwell Xtreme Everest (CXE) leading the successful 2006 CXE Cho Oyu and 2007 CXE Everest expeditions. Mike is the Professor of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Southampton (UoS) and consultant in Critical Care Medicine at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) where he leads the critical care research area of the UHS-UoS NIHR Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit. He also leads the Xtreme Everest Oxygen Research Consortium and the Fit-4-Surgery Group. Mike is Director of the NIAA Health Services Research Centre and chairs the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit. His research interests include human responses to hypoxia, measuring and improving outcome following surgery, acute lung injury, and fluid therapy.
