The Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH) is delighted to announce the appointments of Dr James Hull as a Consultant Respiratory Physician and Dr Guido Pieles as a Consultant Paediatric and Adult Sports and Congenital Cardiologist.

Both Dr Hull and Dr Pieles have also been awarded Honorary Associate Professorships with UCL as part of the Division of Surgery and Interventional Science.

Dr James Hull will head up the Sports Respiratory Clinic at the ISEH, a highly specialist assessment clinic that combines world-leading expertise in the field of sports respiratory medicine with the best tests and therapies, to help diagnose and treat any respiratory issue that is causing problems during exercise.

Dr Hull works with several elite and professional sporting organisations to help athletes overcome their respiratory problems. He is also working with the International Olympic Committee and the English Institute of Sport, as a respiratory expert and is as a Consultant Respiratory Physician at the Royal Brompton Hospital.

Dr Hull’s clinical and research focus centres on exercise-related respiratory problems. This includes work evaluating and helping athletic individuals (of all abilities) with unexplained breathlessness, wheeze and/or cough.

Dr Guido Pieles is a paediatric and adult congenital cardiologist with expertise in inherited cardiac conditions, advanced imaging and sports and exercise cardiology.

He will head up the Sports Cardiology Clinic at the ISEH which offers a full range of cardiac services using state of the art diagnostics to assess and treat cardiovascular health. The ISEH will soon launch a new Mobile Cardiac Laboratory offer professional sporting teams and organisations the option of mobile cardiac evaluation.

Dr Pieles is an exercise expert at the European Pulmonary Vascular Disease network, member of the Association of European Paediatric and Congenital Cardiology (AEPC) Sports Cardiology working group, and acts as Paediatric liaison officer at the ESC Sports cardiology Nucleus. He is also a consulting sports cardiologist at Manchester United FC and visiting sports cardiologist at Aspetar and Aspire Academy Doha.

Dr Pieles will continue his research at ISEH developing innovative methods to monitor cardiac performance in elite athletes and young people with inherited heart disease.
