Rick Miller is the consultant clinical and sports dietitian at the ISEH. As a dietitian, he is able to diagnose, treat and support the recovery from any medical condition where nutrition has been shown to play a role.

Rick has progressed through several prominent clinical posts within the NHS. Covering multiple specialities including bariatrics and obesity management, diabetes care, nutrition support and artificial feeding, gastroenterology and recovery from surgery.

During this time in the NHS he has maintained his passion for sports nutrition by providing expert dietary support to several professional athletes and teams, including boxing, taekwondo, karate, ballet, professional jockeys, bodybuilding, golf, athletics, triathlon and ultra endurance running. He was one of the lead Sports Dietitians for the first European Olympic games during this summer.

Rick reports being a consultant at the ISEH is an amazing opportunity. Ive worked with many different medical teams but the chance to work amongst this many eminent sports clinicians and healthcare professionals is a career-defining moment for me.

Ricks approach to nutrition is to improve his patients from the inside out. Blending his extensive experience in sports nutrition and clinical dietetics to help diagnose and treat his patients in the most optimal fashion.

He says: As a dietitian, I take a food-first approach to my treatment. Patients often come to me with one or two nutrition queries but its hugely rewarding to hear them consistently report how improving their diet has a domino effect on their health, work and sports performance. Its as simple as this, a well nourished patient or sports person recovers faster from surgery or their ailment, performs better in daily life and makes the fastest progress in their sport

He also feels as a competitive athlete himself, competing in Shotokan Karate for 15 years, that this aids his clinical assessment and treatment process.

Competing in Karate for many years at a regional and international level, I understand first-hand the pressures athletes face. Its invaluable to be able to put myself in their shoes.

Ricks goals at the ISEH are to develop and integrate his clinical nutrition expertise across as many specialities and support as many individuals and national sports teams as possible. Even today, nutrition is often a challenging aspect of treatment for patients and athletes. My mission at the ISEH is to be the solution to that.
