England say rugby injuries won't hold them back


As the rugby union Autumn internationals series gets underway England’s rugby union team have struggled with injuries lately. Shoulder, knee and ligament problems are all common in rugby, which combines twisting and turning with acceleration and physical contact. Bruises and bumps are common, though these are generally manageable and are accompanied by a controlled return to play.

On the 5 October the Xtreme Everest team of Kay Mitchell, Prof Mike Grocott and David Howard ran the Bournemouth marathon to raise money for their ongoing Xtreme Everest research and for the Sherpas' Welfare Fund.

Studying pointe injuries in ballet


ISEH consultant Dr Ian McCurdie presented at the British Association of Sport & Exercise Medicine (BASEM) and Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine (FSEM) Combined Annual Conference in Edinburgh in October. He presented data on the range and number of injuries sustained by pre-professional ballet dancers.

ISEH consultant wins Sir Robert Atkins Award


Dr Mike Loosemore has been awarded the 2014 Sir Robert Atkins Award. This international award is made by the Institute of Sport and Exercise Medicine (ISEM) and is named after the former Sports Minister who was a major supporter of the ISEM and it is given to an individual who the Institute judges as having made an outstanding contribution to sport and exercise medicine over a period of at least five years.

Public Health England: Annual Conference 2014


On the 16 and 17 September Public Health England held their annual conference at the University of Warwick. ISEH Development Director Matt James attended the conference which was about bringing together all aspects of public health so that scientific advances, diagnostic techniques, knowledge from the field and online tools are available to those working to improve health and wellbeing.
