Professional Biography

Julie is a Clinical Respiratory Physiotherapist for the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH).

Julie qualified with a BSc Hons degree in physiotherapy from University of Northumbria in 1993. Between 1995-1999, she worked as senior respiratory physiotherapist working in a variety of London teaching hospitals including the Trauma Unit at The Royal London Hospital. During this time, Julie also worked at the Prince of Wales Hospital (Sydney, Australia) and Middlemore Hospital (Auckland, New Zealand), where a passion for helping patients with chronic lung disease and disordered breathing patterns grew.

Upon returning to the UK, Julie took up a senior position at Kings College Hospital, launching a successful hospital pulmonary rehabilitation programme and developing one of the UKs first community pulmonary rehabilitation services. In 2005, she completed her Masters in Physiotherapy and has published on exercising patients with COPD. Since then, Julie has continued to help patients with a variety of respiratory diseases including Asthma, Bronchiectasis, COPD and Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Julie is a committee member of the UK Physiotherapy for ‘Breathing Pattern Disorders’ and lectures on the management of hyperventilation and disordered breathing patterns. She is also a qualified Buteyko practitioner and has continued to be actively involved in breathing retraining programmes for patients with asthma and hyperventilation syndrome.

Julie has successfully worked with the elite athletes with disordered breathing patterns in the build up to various Olympic games. She is a keen sportswoman and has competed in marathons, triathlons and the indoor rowing championships.
