Professional Biography

Rick is a consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine (SEM) at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH). He specialises in all musculoskeletal and sports injuries.

He qualified in medicine from Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals Medical School, University of London, in 1999. He trained in various UK teaching hospitals and worked in the NHS for 12 years. Rick is an accredited musculoskeletal sonographer. He has been listed on the General Medical Council's specialist register since 2011 and is a Fellow of the UK Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine- FFSEM (UK). He is an honorary physician at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

As a junior doctor, SHO training posts include the Oxford John Radcliffe, Hammersmith, Northwick Park and Central Middlesex Hospitals. Rick subsequently completed the London Deanery SEM specialist registrar rotation and worked an extra year as a senior registrar. Specialist registrar postings include the Royal London, Whittington, University College, Homerton, St Mary's and Charing Cross Hospitals; Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) Stanmore and the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) Headley Court.

Rick has an interest in medical education and is an accredited member of the Academy of Medical Educators (MAcadMEd). He was an honorary SEM clinical research fellow at the Olympic Medical Institute (OMI) and University of Southampton. His research thesis contributed to a Master's degree with distinction from University College London (UCL) in 2005. He is an examiner on the University College London and Bath University MSc in SEM courses. He also lectures on the Queen Mary University of London iBSc in SEM course and is also an examiner for the MFSEM(UK) faculty membership examination.

Rick works as a SEM consultant in London. He was sports physician at the English Institute of Sport (EIS), treating GB athletes at their elite multi-sport clinics in University College Hospital centrally and Lee Valley Athletics Centre in east London. Rick worked as a sports medicine doctor at both London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games. He was part of the medical team for the Olympic test events of rowing, canoe sprints and volleyball.

Rick was the EIS team physician for both British Canoe Slalom and British fencing. He was chief medical officer (CMO) for GB wheelchair tennis. Rick was a member of the Wembley National Stadium event medical team from 2007-2009. He was an expedition medical officer on a month-long expedition to the Sinai Peninsula, Egypt in 2001. He previously worked with Chelsea FC Academy (2009-2010) and as a medical officer at the 2010 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships, 2010 UK School Games, 2009 Special Olympics, England Athletics age-group championships, London Marathon, London Triathlon, Blenheim Triathlon and Abu Dhabi International Triathlon (2010-14).
