The Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH) was very sad to hear of the recent passing of Professor Howard Bird.

Professor Bird was an Honorary Visiting Professor at UCL Division of Surgery and was instrumental in setting up and supporting the MSc programme in Performing Arts Medicine since its inception in 2010.

He was a dedicated teacher, popular supervisor and much loved mentor for a decade at UCL, a place he cherished after retiring as a Professor of Pharmacological Rheumatology and former Editor of the British Journal of Rheumatology. His interest and book on Hypermobility remains core in this field and his more recent book Performing Arts Medicine in Clinical Practice is guiding the next generation of specialists.

Performing Arts Medicine MSc Course Lead Dr Hara Trouli said: “We will miss Howard’s smile at the Institute of Sport, Exercise and Health (ISEH) where he would usually arrive from his daily trip from Harrogate to give his numerous lectures and drive our students’ interests in research. We have had the opportunity to attend his funeral on the 19 February and pay our respects on behalf of all at UCL and the ISEH”.
