Bruce Paton, head physiotherapist at the Institute of Sport Exercise and Health recently attended the medical training for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games at Hampden park, which will be one of the main venues for the Commonwealth Games.

There were about 300 health workers from all over Scotland and the UK, and this was the 4th medical training day Glasgow 2014 has run, with over 1,500 medical volunteers, including volunteers to cover new sports such as Rugby Sevens. The day involved running through the logistics of supplying medical cover to the venues, as well as running through case scenarios involving clinical and logistical decision making. It was a great chance to network and meet other medical volunteers. There were many familiar faces as many people had worked at the London Olympic and Paralympic games.

Glasgow has been preparing and the city is getting ready to put on a great show. There was a real feeling of anticipation in the organisers and medical teams and a real positive energy in Glasgow. There will be a special atmosphere for these Commonwealth Games and it promises some great sport and a chance to showcase Scotland and the UK in a very special way.

Bruce Paton will be based at the Games which run from 23 July – 3 August 2014 along with the ISEH’s Dr Mike Loosemore who is the Chief Medical Officer for the Commonwealth Games.
