ISEH are proud to again support the Isokinetic Football Medicine Conference on the 9 and 10 April this year at the QE2 conference centre in London.

The meeting is the world’s largest football medicine conference with over 2,000 international delegates including several leading physicians and surgeons with a special interest in managing elite sport.  

This year’s conference focuses on return to play. As one of the official academic partners the ISEH will be hosting a workshop around the issue of concussion.  

Our speakers will include Ian Beasley from the FA, Simon Kemp from the RFU, Jiri Dvorak from FIFA, Peter Hamlyn from ISEH and specialist neurologist Richard Sylvester from ISEH and Queens Square.   

This world leading panel will give their unique insights and perspective on the management of players of players with complex concussion and the issues related in returning these back to play.  

Dr Beasley (the FA's lead clinician) will discuss the recent FA concussion guidelines, talk about the issues involved in setting up an expert panel and explain how the information was disseminated amongst the football community.   

Simon Kemp (the RFU's lead clinician) will highlight some of the lessons learnt about concussion from last year’s rugby World Cup. This will include video footage and some of decision making process which were used to remove players from the field of play following head injuries.  

Peter Hamlyn, Consultant Neurological and Spinal Surgeon; Director of Education, ISEH has exceptional experience in the management of traumatic brain injury in elite athletes, he has worked with  a large number of sports including football, rugby, boxing, and the NFL. Mr Hamlyn will discuss some of the recent developments in the treatment of mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) and his thoughts on the future direction of research into this condition.  

Jiri Dvorak (FIFA head of medical) is a well-known figure and has been central in formulating the international guidelines for the management of concussion in elite sport. As part of our panel he will focus on the new FIFA centre in Zurich which has been specifically set up for the management of concussion in elite sport.  

Richard Sylvester (Consultant Neurologist - queens square and ISEH). Dr Sylvester has been central in setting up the elite athlete complex concussion service at ISEH and has a special interest in MTBI from his work at Queens square (a world leading centre for neurology and neurosurgery). His talk will involve a discussion of some of the common presentations to the concussion clinic and the range of issues found on detailed examination and investigation of this subgroup of players.
