The Advanced Brain Health Clinic at the ISEH is a unique neurological service for retired elite rugby and football players who have concerns about their brain health and our dedicated team are looking for volunteers to take part in a study looking into the long-term brain health of retired elite athletes.

It is possible that some rugby and football players have an increased risk of developing neurological and psychiatric problems including post-traumatic dementias, such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). This risk may be related to exposure to repetitive head impacts throughout their career. The prevalence of brain health issues is unclear, so it is crucial to understand this further.

We require healthy male and female volunteers aged from 25-65 to serve as controls to help researchers understand how multiple head impacts affects the brain.

What tests are involved?
  •  Memory/thinking tests
  • Brain MRI scan
  • Blood tests

All testing is FREE. We aim to repeat these tests in 2 years’ time to see if any changes to the brain have taken place.

Testing will take roughly 3.5 hours.

Are you eligible?

Unfortunately, those who have had any previous head injuries such as concussion, who participate in contact sports, or who have certain neurological conditions are not eligible to take part.

Volunteers will receive:
  •  £50 gift
  • Travel reimbursement
