The ISEH are committed to providing the highest quality of health care provision for people of adult age and for those all-important puberty years too. Young adults aged between 12 and 16 are undergoing hormonal changes but can also be experiencing other ailments which can be disguised as growing pains.

Within the UK scoliosis affects 3-4 out of every 1000 young adults every year with idiopathic scoliosis being the most common. Although it can develop in toddlers and young children, idiopathic scoliosis most often begins during puberty. Both boys and girls can be affected; however, girls are more likely to develop larger curves that require medical care. If a child is still growing, a scoliosis curve can worsen rapidly during a growth spurt.

Conventional imaging techniques are not geared at imaging the whole spine in one go whereas the equipment at ISEH is. The X-ray images obtained will also help determine the shape, direction, location and angle of the curve. The medical name for the angle the spine curves is known as the Cobb angle.

None of us are perfectly symmetrical but some children have significant differences in the length of their legs. This condition is known as leg length discrepancy or leg length mal-alignment can present itself as knee, back, hip pain and leg tiredness when walking and in many cases with no pain or discomfort at all.

After an initial assessment a doctor may refer the patient for leg measurement or full leg length imaging to help determine the difference in leg length before a treatment plan can be devised.

As our legs are usually of an unequal length, measurements made with the patient supine are not recognized as an anthropometric technique. Measurements made with the patient standing are far more reliable.

The ISEH have a provision for imaging these conditions using our Siemens Ysio Ortho equipment. This coupled with our low dose digital x-ray equipment results in a fast and efficient service providing low dose optimal images. As with all of our other imaging services; 3T MRI and ultrasound, a report by a consultant radiologist is usually available within 24 hours.

In keeping with our commitment to be a leader in health care provision we can offer a dedicated Registered sick children’s nurse to be on site every Friday 8.30-12.30 to facilitate this.
