Farewell Sir Robert


At the end of September Sir Robert Naylor stepped down as chief executive of UCLH. As chair of the ISEH board Sir Robert Naylor was instrumental in setting up the Institute and we would like to thank him for all his support and wish him the very best for the future.

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing


A cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), more widely known as a VO2max test, is a non-invasive gold standard assessment of aerobic fitness. CPET assesses exercise capacity by looking at how an individual’s heart and lungs are able to cope with increasing demand of incremental exercise.

Playing fields baked hard by the late summer sun can place the foot at significant injury risk in the return to training and competitive sports in late August and September. Hyperextension injuries, or forced upward movement of the big toe metatarso-phalangeal joint can lead to a variety of injuries which have broadly been called a turf toe as Mr Michael Oddy, ISEH Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon reports.

Free flight physiology project


The Free Flight Physiology Project (FFPP) aims to study the physiology of free fliers (paragliders, hang gliders, sailplane and wingsuit pilots) to improve performance and safety, gain insights into hypobaric hypoxia and explore the use of novel telemetry in extreme settings.
