Professional Biography

Dr Edward (Ned) Gilbert-Kawai is a Specialist Registrar in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine. At the ISEH, his role is as the Senior Research Fellow for UCL's Centre for Altitude, Space and Extreme Environment (CASE) Medicine. This involved acting as the Research Leader on the recent 2013 Xtreme Everest 2 Research Expedition.

Ned's primary research interests quite literally focus on the microcirculation, and his PhD related to the physiological adaptations innate to high-altitude natives, which confer a performance and/or survival advantage at high altitude over lowland inhabitants.

Additionally, Ned has a keen interest in Medical Genomics having been sponsored by HEE to undertake a Masters in the subject at Imperial.

Ned is also a lecturer and examiner at University College London, Kings College London and at The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
